Gilsonite mines of Iran
About 30 Gilsonite mines were active in Iran and a total of 400,000 tons are extracted and 260,000 tons are exported annually. These mines are mainly concentrated in the provinces of Kermanshah, Ilam and Lorestan and partly in Bushehr (Asaluyeh), which are mined in open and underground. The largest mines in Qasr Shirin Miavan pointed out that they are open-pit and can extract up to 500 tons per day. The quality of mining depends on the exploitation method and its location.

The granularity of Gilsonite is different depending on the type of use and it starts from 30-40 mesh which is produced with a hammer mill and has the ability to produce up to 100 mesh, but from 100 mesh to 400 mesh with a wing mill or a combination of Indo with air breather and from 400 mesh to 600 mesh, it can be softened and crushed with a jet mill.
For use, fine granulation definitely needs a closed system because it creates a lot of dust and pollutes the surrounding environment. The most common size used by buyers in various industries is 200 mesh. According to the 200-mesh standard, it does not mean that 100% of the powder passes through the sieve. And usually, 80% of it passes and the rest are larger sizes.

Gilsonite solubility
The solubility of Gilsonite in different solvents has different percentages, but it has the ability to dissolve in most petroleum materials. The percentage of solubility in solvents shows the quality of the product and, as a result, the percentage of solubility and mixing with hydrocarbons and resins. the lowers the ash load, the higher its solubility, but this is not certain and depends on the type and time of Gilsonite formation. By dissolving, the ash can be filtered and after drying, the solubility can be produced up to 99%.
